EAST COAST EQUESTRIAN
January 2018
Page 9
A collection of equine films,
fresh from the EQUUS Film
Festival (EFF) in New York
City, will be screened at the
first EQUUS Film Festival Tour
Stop of 2018. It will be held at
the Maryland State Fairgrounds
January 19 & 20, 2018.
“When life gives you
lemons, the best thing to do
is make lemonade,” said Ross
Peddicord, Executive Director,
Maryland Horse Industry Board,
who contacted the EFF to fill the
void left by the cancelation of
the Maryland Horse World Expo.
The EFF had a standing date in
May. Organizers hope to develop
the festival into a new regional
event incorporating equestrian
film, art, literature, music and
food.
The films will screen on
Friday, January 19 from 4 pm
to 10 pm and Saturday January
20 from 10 am until 6 pm in the
Grandstand Grill and Vista Room
at the fairgrounds.
Festival highlights will
include Chincoteague ponies
and the 20th Anniversary of
the Maryland Horse Industry
Board. The official artwork for
the festival is by Chincoteague
pony photographer, Darcy Cole,
author of the booklet, "Foals of
the Wild Chincoteague Pony
Herds”. The festival’s corner-
stone film will be “The Wild
Ponies Of Chincoteague”,
directed by Maryland filmmaker
Kurt Kojala. It played to a nearly
sold-out audience in New York,
and chronicles a Maryland teen-
ager who overcomes depression
by pursuing her lifelong dream
of purchasing a Chincoteague
pony. Chincoteague oysters
will be served, a Chincoteague
pony will be on hand to meet the
kids, and the MHIB will raffle
an overnight stay at the annual
Chincoteague Pony Penning
Round-Up. Filmmaker panels
are planned and a celebration
of the 20th Anniversary of the
MHIB is planned for Saturday
evening following the film
festival.
