Safety is Key at Gateway Stables
George Morris once told his student, Marie Jakubauskas, “someone has to teach beginners and you are the person with the patience to do so.”
Marie, now an extraordinarily fit and active 69 year old, has made her Gateway Stables a Mecca of safe riding, teaching hunt and balanced seat, second level dressage, western, cross country and recreational riding in a safe and professional environment. Marie, Gateway Stables’ founder and president, has been educating riders in safe horsemanship practices since 1964. She is the Northeast Regional Director of the Horseman’s Safety Association and all Gateway instructors are HSA certified instructors and trail guides as well as certified for CPR and first aid. Gateway Stables has a five star rating from the HSA.
Gateway Stables is unusual in that it offers trail rides to the public. Half hour and hour long trail rides are available year round, reservations required.
Lessons are available year-round for riders from beginners to advanced. The farm’s instructors are experienced in all disciplines and put safety first. Marie is certified through third level by the American Association of Riding Instructors of America and a nationally accredited clinician in hunt seat, recreational riding and stable management. She also teaches horse psychology and round penning, and certifies instructors and trail guides in their respective disciplines.
Gateway Stables offers a variety of equine experiences for riders as young as age four. The farm’s Kinderide program, for ages 5-7, focuses on developing self esteem, confidence, balance and enthusiasm for horse sports and is under the direction of a teacher with a Master’s degree in education. The six week program emphasizes fun and safety, and a horse show held the last session demonstrates what the kids have learned. Summer camps are held June through August. Gateway Stables offers a Badge Clinic for Girl Scout groups with an hour of ground work and an hour of riding, and pony/horse parties. Clinics are offered periodically.
The farm, located on the Pennsylvania/Delaware border, is in the center of prime hunt country and one of the most scenic sites in Chester County. It’s so scenic that commercials have been shot on the farm. Boarders can choose from full or field board. They have access to a large lighted outdoor ring, two lunging rings, an indoor riding track, cross country practice area, spacious paddocks with shelter, large matted stalls, hot and cold wash stalls, tack lockers, and automatic waterers inside and out. Fees include high quality feed and free choice hay, worming, handling for the farrier, blanketing and more.
For the Horse Farms Open House: Gateway stables will offer demonstrations by champion English and western riders, round pen demos, pony rides and tours of the facility. A demonstration will introduce yoga on horseback.
