Choose a Discipline and Pursue It at Foxfield Farms
Foxfield Farms offers lessons and training in hunter/jumpers, dressage, and eventing, breaks, conditions and trains thoroughbreds for racing and hosts the Triangle Therapeutic riding program.
Susan Walmer has owned and managed Foxfield Farms for 27 years and has grown it from the original 23 acre farm to two locations – one in Reinholds, northern Lancaster County, and a second for training thoroughbreds in Oxford, Chester County-- with a total of 154 acres and over 100 stalls.
At the Reinholds location, the only location open to Open House visitors, hunter/jumper and eventing lessons are taught by Kerri Healy. Healy rode as a junior with Melvin Dutton and later trained with Olympic eventers Bruce and Buck Davidson in dressage, cross country and stadium jumping. Bernette Racis teaches beginner through intermediate hunter lessons. Foxfield Farm leases space to dressage trainer Angela Sasso of Alliance Dressage & Sporthorse Center (www.angelasassodressage.com).
Foxfield Farms’ Reinholds location consists of 90 acres, 80 acres of which are in grass paddocks and pastures. There are 70 stalls in six barns, 21 of which have attached all weather paddocks and heated waterers. The 80’ x 200’ indoor arena has a heated and air conditioned lounge. An outdoor ring measuring 125’ by 225’ has sand and rubber footing and lights. The farm has four round pens, a hot walker and three hot and cold water wash stalls, one of which has radiant heat for cold weather grooming and clipping. A 20 meter by 60 meter dressage arena is under construction.
Foxfield Farms offers a family friendly atmosphere for boarders who range from serious competitors to casual riders. Training packages to prep horse and rider for show season and transportation to and from local shows, from schooling to A-rated hunters and select three day events, are available.
Foxfield Farms’ staff has more than 25 years experience foaling. Boarding is offered for mares, foals and yearlings, with shipping to and from the stallion of your choice available. The Foalert birth monitoring system is used to alert staff to impending births.
The Oxford facility has 64 acres of double fenced paddocks and pastures, an expansive indoor arena and six horse exerciser. The 38 stall training barn is bright and airy and contains an indoor gallop. Foxfield Farms leases stalls at the Fair Hill Training Center, just four miles away, for use in gate training and conditioning. Licensed thoroughbred trainer Chuck Martin has been with Foxfield Farms since 1986. His expertise in breaking horses for leading trainers at Philadelphia Park, Penn National, Monmouth and Belmont is unsurpassed and he can take horses to any level of fitness. Foxfield Farm’s large pastures can accommodate broodmares, young stock and layups.
Triangle Therapeutic Riding, which operates from Foxfield Farm, is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving children and adults with special needs. Instructors are certified through North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and Pennsylvania Council for Therapeutic Horsemanship. We believe in individualized instruction, and offer private and semi-private sessions for $40 a lesson year round, using an indoor arena in inclement weather. TTR strives to foster independence among riders and horse shows, clinics, and extra coaching are available to students who are more serious about riding.
Recently TTR was given the Red Rose Award for dedicated service to the community. In 2006 Executive Director Laura Rutledge was invited to the International Conference of Therapeutic Riding in Germany where she collaborated with professionals from 15 different countries regarding teaching techniques for children with Autism and Psycho-Educational Riding.
